Fibo wall panels in energy-efficient modular housing from DMDmodular

DMDmodular has recently achieved a significant milestone, successfully completing a fully energy-efficient housing project that tackles the industry’s most pressing challenges, with Fibo’s waterproof wall panels used throughout.

With the built environment responsible for 38% of greenhouse gas emissions, the real estate market will play a significant role in introducing solutions that meet the challenges of the future and the Net Zero objectives. DMDmodular’s new development in Mysłowice, Poland is an energy-efficient, multi-occupancy building, built in response to an initiative led by the Polish National Centre for Research and Development and fully financed by EU funds.

Designed and constructed using a volumetric modular system, it was developed by DMDmodular in collaboration with researchers, architects and technologists. The development comprises 29 apartments, ranging in size from 45 to 70 sqm, and formed from 56 fully finished and furnished modules, manufactured at DMDmodular’s facility near Krakow.

With a focus on sustainability, the project features a range of innovative solutions that enable a positive energy balance, generating as much energy as it uses. From cutting-edge air handling units (with 95% air recovery efficiency) and thermal energy recovery from sewage tanks to renewable energy sources and incorporating measures to minimise water consumption – all helping to reduce the building’s overall carbon footprint.

Choosing sustainable building materials was also a priority, with Fibo’s waterproof wall panel systems installed. Manufactured from layers of PEFC certified plywood and high-pressure laminate, Fibo’s wall panels offer a sustainable alternative to tiles, with a carbon saving of 40%. The panels have been installed in a classic Denver White tile effect design, across areas where high-strength, durability and quick assembly were required, such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Speaking about the development, Ewelina Woźniak Szpakiewicz, President of the Management Board of DMDmodular, said:

“We believe that this pilot scheme will help generate true interest in modular technology, combined with sustainable building systems and products. Our experience enables us to provide innovative solutions for the entire real estate sector, including turnkey investments in industries such as hotels or private dormitory projects. This development will operate like a modern machine, while simultaneously offering a comprehensive solution and ready-made export product, one that can be implemented anywhere in the world.”

Sven Konrad, Head of Prefab and Export Sales at Fibo, added:

“We believe that it is no good to have a product that fits sustainability requirements if it doesn’t look visually appealing. It’s important to balance sustainability with both durability and aesthetics if we are to truly deliver the housing of the future. Fibo wall panels even come with a 25-year guarantee, offering the assurance that they will stand the test of time.

“While wall panels may have previously been seen as a cheap or dull option, this is no longer the case. Thanks to the latest market and technological developments, wall panels come with a tile-effect look and feel. The top layer of laminate on Fibo wall panels is etched out to reveal a realistic grout line, offering a greener, durable and visually appealing alternative to tiles for any modular housing project.”

The Mysłowice development stands as a technology demonstrator, offering an invaluable, scalable and global solution for both local governments and private investors. Defined by its superior quality finish and energy efficiency, the project also had a rapid construction timeline of just four months. This high-quality, sustainable and quick delivery method can effectively address the housing shortages and energy crisis, as well as rising construction costs associated with traditional building methods.

DMDmodular is an award-winning company focusing on the housing and hospitality industries, delivering unique volumetric modular solutions to international markets.

Fibo’s range of waterproof wall panel systems are inspired by Scandinavian living, with a variety of colours and styles available. Ideal for residential kitchens and bathrooms, as well as wider applications – including hospitals and schools – its panels offer a stunning alternative to tiles, as well as significant time, labour and carbon savings.
