Regulator warns remediation delays continue

The Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) has released the latest results from its survey examining fire safety in social housing buildings over 11m in height.

Out of 17,010 buildings reported, 1,924 were found to have a ‘life critical fire safety defect’ linked to their external wall systems. More than 99.5% of these buildings have now undergone a fire risk assessment.

The data shows that 1,468 buildings (76.3%) with identified defects are expected to be remediated within the next five years.

Since June 2017, a total of 2,723 buildings have been identified with “life critical fire safety issues.” 970 of these (35.6%) have either been fully remediated or have completed works and are awaiting a final assessment.

The regulator said it will continue to track the performance of social landlords, focusing on both remediation progress and delivery against planned timelines.

Will Perry, director of strategy at RSH, said: “Landlords must act swiftly to address fire safety defects so tenants are, and feel, safe in their homes.

“We will continue to closely monitor progress, engage through our regulatory work, and follow up with any landlord whose plans or pace of remediation raise concerns.”
